How Much of This Was AI?

I sent a client a strategy document this week—a prospect list, competitive positioning, pricing recommendations, the works. He read through it and his first question wasn't about the strategy.
It was:
"How much of this was put together with AI?"
Fair question.
And it's worth sitting with because if you've been using AI in your own business, you've probably wondered the same thing. Can AI just do this? Do I really need to hire someone? Or spend hours figuring it out myself?
Here's the honest answer—the same one I gave him.
"I use AI to speed up the research, finding comparable businesses, exploring the competitive landscape, organizing information and to help draft the document itself. But the read on your customers, your market, and the strategy is me. AI is a research and drafting tool, not the one calling the shots."
That distinction matters.
It's also good news if you're building your business yourself.
A huge portion of strategy work is mechanical. Researching competitors. Organizing information. Looking for trends. Creating a first draft. AI can dramatically reduce the time those tasks take. You don't need to spend an entire weekend building a competitor list or staring at a blank document wondering where to start.
The part that's harder to hand off is the read—spotting the patterns in who your best customers actually are and deciding what to do with them.
But here's something worth remembering: an outside consultant isn't automatically better at that than you are.
I bring a different perspective because I've watched similar patterns play out across dozens of businesses and industries. Sometimes that makes it easier to recognize opportunities or blind spots that aren't obvious from the inside.
You bring something I never could: years of conversations, instincts, and context about your customers that never make it into a spreadsheet or CRM.
Neither perspective is complete on its own.
The strongest strategy usually comes from combining both.
The real question isn't whether AI can replace judgment.
It can't.
The better question is whether you're making decisions with the best information available.
AI can gather more information than ever before. You still have to decide what it means.
That's the skill that matters, and I don't think it's becoming less valuable. I think it's becoming the advantage.
Put It to Work
Think about one decision you're facing right now.
Maybe you're deciding which service to promote, whether to raise prices, or which customers you want more of.
Start with the research.
Ask AI:
"I'm trying to decide [decision]. Before you give me advice, tell me what information someone would normally gather to make this decision well. Then help me collect it."Once you've gathered that information, ask AI to organize it.
"Based on what we've found, summarize the key patterns, opportunities, risks, and unanswered questions. Don't recommend anything yet."Now comes the part AI can't do for you.
Read the summary and add everything you know that isn't written anywhere.
Think about questions like:
Which customers do you genuinely enjoy working with?
Which projects are the most profitable?
What problems keep showing up?
What opportunities excite you?
What does your experience tell you that the data can't?
Then ask AI one final question:
"Combine your research with the experience I just shared. Where do those two perspectives agree? Where do they disagree? What assumptions should I challenge before making a decision?"That's when AI stops being a content generator and starts becoming a thinking partner.
